Eric Clapton has owned many guitars throughout his life. What
follows is list of almost all the guitars Clapton has ever owned
and played. Clapton's name has become synonomous with Fender guitars,
especially the Strat, but he has owned many other Fender models
throughout his career other than just Strats.
Fender
For example, he owns a Fender Bass VI and 2 Fender Electric XII's.
These three guitars each made appearances in the "Tears in
Heaven" video. Also
among Clapton's Fender collection is a Jazzmaster. This guitar
was played by Eric during his days with the Yardbirds. And
finally, as mentioned before,
Clapton has become particularly well known for his love of the Stratocaster.
Clapton's most cherished Strat is the one that is referred to as
'Blackie.'
This black Strat, which has now been put into retirement by Clapton,
was assembled from the parts of three different 1950's Strats. Eric
also owns 9
other Strats, 6 of which are his own signature models.
Besides all of his Strats Eric also has owned a few Telecasters.
One of these Telecasters is a blonde 1952 model. In addition to
this '52 Telecaster, Eric also played two other models during his
stints with the Yardbirds and Blind Faith. And last
but not least is the sunburst Telecaster which Eric played in the
"Tears in Heaven" video.
Gibson
Eric Clapton has also owned quite a few Gibson guitars throughout
his career as well. One of the most notable Gibsons that Eric
has owned was the psychedelic '61 Les Paul/SG Series 1 that he played
during his days with Cream. This guitar is now owned by Todd
Rundgren. The Gibsons which Clapton used during the sessions
and tour for "From the Cradle" include a Byrdland natural, an ES
150, 2 ES 335's, and an L5CES. Besides these various Gibsons, Eric
also has owned many Les Pauls. These Les Pauls include a black custom
model with three pickups. This particular guitar was used by Eric
during his days with Cream, Delaney and Bonnie ,and
The Plastic Ono Band. Clapton later gave this particular
guitar to Albert Lee. Eric also owned two Les Paul Goldtops, one
of which was given to Delaney Bramlett. One of Clapton's
most recognizable Les Pauls is the red one which can be heard on
the Beatles' "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" from their classic "white
album". This guitar was later given to George Harrison. The
4 remaining Les Pauls were used by Clapton during his years with
Cream and John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. Clapton's various
other Gibsons include a Byrdland (played at the concert for
Bangla Desh), a Chet Atkins gut string, an ES 175 (this guitar
is now in Chicago's Hard Rock Cafe), an ES 335 (played during his
stint with the Yardbirds), an ES 350 T (played in the Chuck Berry
documentary "Hail, Hail..."), an Explorer (played at the ARMS concerts),
a Firebird I (played during his days with Cream and Delaney
and Bonnie), a Gibson L5 (played in the "Wish it Would Rain"
video), an L7, an SG Standard, and lastly, a Switchmaster.
Martin
Alongside the Fender and Gibson guitars that Clapton has owned
are many Martin guitars. He has owned nearly a dozen different
Martin models over the last several years, therefore it would be
difficult to list all of them here. However, a few Martin models
which Clapton has owned include a Martin 12 string slotted head,
a 1939 vintage Martin 000-42, and a D-28. After examining the list
of guitars above it is very apparrent that Eric Clapton has owned
an enormous array of guitars. However, this list is by no means
complete, for Clapton has owned numerous other guitars besides the
ones above.
