I have decided to begin with a sort of selective history of Drill
Team to get the many fans up to speed on certain very important
aspects of the band. I know when you're Internet surfing you don't
really want to read introductory paragraphs. All rock bands go
through certain phases. Even in the "early days" before their
first releases, certain specific eras are discernable. For example,
there is always or nearly always a period of high idealism between
at least a couple members of the act in which at least one of
them has left a previous rock act to form a new rock act which,
it is believed, will not have the same problems as before, which
will break all boundaries, and as part of which, the members will
begin sleeping in doorways/living a "street" life, playing magical
shows to empty rooms, and writing spontaneously in vans. There
are also numerous phases when, in the new band, factions arise,
as if two people might someday form yet another band or work on
solo projects in order to forge previously uncharted musical paths,
much like the wild tapir. There is also usually a period when
everyone decides they need to settle on a name for the group.
At this point, the group members gather around and begin "brainstorming"
to come up one. At this point, it is necessary for someone to
say that actually , you know, "The Beatles" is not really that
good a name and that it doesn't really matter what the band is
called once they hear the music. Everyone else in the band of
course knows this is ludicrous and thinks that he/she just doesn't
have any standards of his/her own. In proto-Drill Team's search
for the perfect name, all of the following were suggested at one
time or other. (There were more.) Some of the names (or very close
to) have since been used, some quite independent of us or our
wide sphere of influence. I have tried to mark all of these with
asterisks. When you're Internet surfing, you don't really want
to read introductory paragraphs. You can use any of these names
you want. In fact, some of them may seem better than "Drill Team"
but you know "The Beatles" wasn't that good a name either.
